Plus Size Jackets
When it comes to jackets and coats, it can be tempting to think you only need one or two for the chillier seasons, but, in reality, they’re some of the most crucial parts of really making an outfit. Not only for fashionable purposes, plus-size jackets and plus-size coats can help dial up or down your comfort level with warmth and utility. But how do you know which styles are right for you or which ones to add to your wardrobe? You’ve come to the right place for those answers because our stylists here at Dia & Co truly know outerwear and how to rock every style.
A Collection of Outerwear for Every Woman
Whenever we talk outerwear, we immediately think of coats for women, but even coats come in all styles and silhouettes:
- Trench coats are characterized by their long length and can hit anywhere from the knee to the ankle. They’re great for warding off blustery fall days and intense rain, as they cover you fully for any harsh weather, but are often lighter in weight.
- Raincoats tend to come in more fun styles like full-on vibrant plastic looks all the way to practical waxed canvas raincoats. Like a trench coat, they tend to have a cinched waist, but usually hit anywhere from the hip to the upper thigh. They’re best for places with more temperate climates.
- Wool coats offer a very sophisticated top layer that’s perfect for dressing up. Because they’re made for fancy occasions, it’s best to look over the cocktail and evening wear that you tend to wear and style your top layer wool coat for the silhouettes you wear. For example, if you always wear long dresses, go for a long wool coat over a short peacoat. You’ll be warmer while protecting your whole look.
- Winter coats are, in general, heavier in weight. There are winter puffer coats that hit at the waist and then there are long parka coats that hit at the thigh. If you live anywhere in the northern hemisphere, you definitely need a heavyweight coat style, preferably with a hood, to keep you covered.
Jackets, too, come in a variety of styles and silhouettes:
- Plus-size winter jackets and snow jackets tend to be perfect for anyone living in the south or along the coast, for when you need jackets made of heavier materials to battle the elements. Fabrics like wool, down, down-alternative, faux fur or fleece can all be turned into a cropped jacket length, fitted with pockets, high necks and hoods to keep you warm. Consider them all while you shop for a jacket that’s right for you.
- Fleece jackets and tech jackets are perfect for working out and running errands. They tend to wick away moisture while keeping your warmth in, while providing you with plenty of pockets. These types of workout jackets (like plus-size ski jackets, running jackets and puffer vests) will always help you live your best life while working out. Be sure to find ones that suit all the movements you get into!
- Plus-size bomber jackets and moto jackets are characterized by their shorter length, between your waist and your ribs for a cropped look. These styles can range from being statement-makers (like plus-size leather jackets and motorcycle jackets with cross-over zippers) to fully functional (like waterproof rain jackets and puffer jackets). These cropped styles are needed to round out your wardrobe to go along with all the high-waisted trousers, jeans and maxi dresses.
Jackets and Coats for Any Season
As we’ve touched upon, plus-size jackets and coats should be selected per season based on their weight and how effectively they achieve your desired look in each season. Here’s a little bit of inspiration for every season:
- In the winter, it’s clear that coats are important, but be sure to select at least three for your wardrobe. You’ll need a super heavy one that’s waterproof for wintery mixes and offers great wind coverage. Then it’s great to have a heavier jacket, like one made of shearling, wool, or of lightweight down or down-alternative that can stand alone or layer under your heavier coat. Finally, you’ll need a stand-out evening coat, like a peacoat or trench style coat, that covers all your cocktail dresses and special occasion looks for the holiday season.
- Spring jackets are even easier—this is when we pull out the light wash denim jackets, the colorful motorcycle jackets, vests, technical jack
